My name is Searah Stoops, and I am originally from Davie County, North Carolina. I am currently in the spring semester of my junior year here at Catawba. I am an Accounting major, with a double major in Economics and Finance with a minor in Business Administration. I have been given several amazing opportunities since being here at Catawba, from building my leadership skills through my time as a Residence Assistant, to enhancing my cultural experience through the international study program and getting to travel to Portugal. The staff and faculty at Catawba really care about helping you succeed, and they will push you to be better than you thought you could be.
When I was planning my classes for my current semester, my advisor asked me if I had started looking into internship opportunities. I, being the biggest procrastinator ever, had not. I planned to spend my last summer before graduation working at my job back home as a manager at Sonic. My advisor told me I needed to go to Career Services and let them know that I was looking for an internship, which is exactly what I did. The next day I received an email from Career Services that there was a paid accounting internship in Winston-Salem with the accounting firm Gray, Callison, and Co, P.A. from January to April. I sent career services my resume and they helped me update it to make sure it looked professional. Within a week I had an interview for the internship, and by the end of winter break I was offered the position.
Career Services made it feel like this opportunity fell into my lap it was so easy, they also made sure that I received class credit for it, which is just another plus. Career Services is truly a wonderful resource here at Catawba. I am now thriving at an internship that I would have never heard of. I am getting to learn how an accounting firm runs and learning more and more about my field. Since it is tax season, I am getting to process a lot of returns and doing any general bookkeeping or other task around the firm. Everyone at my internship has welcomed me with open arms. It is a great work environment. I cannot begin to explain how amazing this entire experience has been. There has already been some talk of extending the internship through the summer, which I would be more than grateful to continue.
Career Services helps so many students just like me by helping them create a LinkedIn account, creating or revising resumes, mock interviews, helping them find internships, having job fairs on campus, and so much more. I would highly recommend anyone who is looking for an internship or getting ready to head into their field to go to Career Services. And if you’re looking for exciting opportunities like I’ve had, look no further than Catawba!
