Catawba College Nursing Student Receives Blue Cross Scholarship

Catawba College nursing student Martin Solano Munoz of Kannapolis, has been awarded a scholarship from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) for $3,333.24.
Munoz, a senior at Catawba, is one of 25 students at independent colleges and universities in North Carolina to receive the scholarship, which were distributed by the Independent College Fund of North Carolina (ICFNC). The scholarships are part of a three-year, $250,000 pledge from Blue Cross NC.
Dr. Valerie Rakes, Chair of the Department of Nursing in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance at Catawba, said, “Martin goes above and beyond to advance his student nursing career. He is a leader in his class and has learned the values and professionalism to practice as a nurse. He will make contributions to the profession upon graduation.”

Scholarship recipients are students from North Carolina who are first generation, underrepresented or from families who demonstrate financial need. They must be a junior or senior and have a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
The Independent College Fund of North Carolina is the division of North Carolina Independent Colleges & Universities (NCICU) that provides student scholarship aid and enrichment programs. NCICU is a 501(c) 3 non-profit corporation that represents North Carolina’s 36 private colleges and universities.
