Catawba College Students Participate in Students of North Carolina Association of Educators' Pinning Ceremony

Fourteen Catawba College students were honored in a pinning ceremony October 10 in Tom Smith Auditorium for their admission to the Teacher Education Program. The ceremony was sponsored by the Student North Carolina Association of Educators' (SNCAE).

The Rowan-Salisbury Teacher of the Year for 2006-07, Mrs. Maria Freeman, was the guest speaker for the event. Leigh Marcischak of Houston, Pa., gave a reflection from the student perspective. Ms. Marcischak will graduate from Catawba College in May, 2007 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and is currently student teaching at Isenberg Elementary School.

Admission to a teacher education program is not automatic. Admission requirements include successful completion of PRAXIS I standardized tests of reading, writing, and mathematics; establishment of a 2.5 or better grade point average; and an interview. Applicants must also pass a criminal background check.

Those pinned during the ceremony included Henry Fairley of Salisbury; Hillary Hampton of Salisbury; Angela Ingraham of Salisbury; Emily Morgan of Norfolk, Va.; Christine Ofslager of Midlothian, Va.; Kelly Phillips of Hanover, Pa.; Sarah Reeves of Pilot Mountain, Leigh Telzrow of Fairview, Texas; Shane Timmons of Denton; Ryan Villiard of Holiday, Fla.; and Candace Weathers of Salisbury. Dr. Rhonda Truitt of Salisbury was also pinned as the newest member of the Teacher Education Faculty.   Faculty advisors for the SNCAE organization are former North Carolina Teacher of the Year Dr. Cynthia Osterhus and Mrs. Amanda Bosch.

Three students who were eligible to be pinned were unable to participate in the ceremony due to other conflicts. They included Jessica Cleary of Boca Raton, Fla.; Kristen Phillips of Fredericksburg, Va.; and Elizabeth Dunkman of Festus, Mo.

The Teacher Education program at Catawba College recently fared well on the most recent IHE Performance Report, with a 100% pass rate on PRAXIS II examinations reported for program completers.
