Catawba Singers Offer Home Concert to Cap 2010 Tour of Mid-Atlantic States

January 20, 2010

Category: Events, Music, Students

The Catawba SingersThe Catawba College Singers and the Catawba Chamber Singers will offer a free home concert to cap their 2010 Mid-Atlantic States Tour at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The Singers will be conducted by Associate Professor and Director of Vocal Choral and Sacred Music Studies Paul E. Oakley, and accompanied on the piano by Dr. Robert Hallquist, instructor of piano and choral accompanist. Professor Christina Pier, instructor of voice and soprano soloist, will also perform during the Sunday event.

The Catawba College Singers made their 2010 Tour of the Mid-Atlantic States January 7 through 14. Performance stops included Henderson, N.C.; Frederick, Md.; Washington, D.C.; Lancaster, Pa.; Easton, Md.; and Raleigh, N.C.

Among the highlights of the tour was a performance in Washington National Cathedral on Sunday, January 10. On that date, the Catawba Singers offered a Choral Prelude Concert there in the afternoon, followed by their participation in the Cathedral’s Service of Evensong.

ProgramThe repertoire of music performed on the tour included selections by George Frideric Handel; Phil Collins; Josquin des Pres; John V. Mochnick; Ralph Vaughan Williams; Antonio Vivaldi; and several traditional spirituals. Dr. Hallquist and Professor Pier also accompanied the Catawba Singers on tour.

The annual tour provides an opportunity for the college to have "face to face" conversations with alumni and prospective students in various regions of the country. Additionally, it allows the institution to widen and deepen ties to the United Church of Christ denomination, with which Catawba is affiliated. In each of the cities toured, churches hosted the students in members' homes and also provided performance venues.

Two students who are members of the Catawba Singers, Zach and Quinn McRae of Hendersonville, N.C., provided a blog of their tour experiences. Read their "Twins on Tour" blog.
