Education Graduates at Catawba College Honored

co-kdpgrads19.pngThe Department of Teacher Education at Catawba College honored six graduating seniors as West Scholars at its year-end celebration. 

Recognized with crystal apples were Hunter Benfield of Kannapolis, Brittany Hager of Salisbury, Leah Huggins of Hope Mills, Tyler McHargue of Statesville, Christina Thacker of Mooresville, and Katie Zobel of Chapin, SC. 

The West Teaching Scholarship for up to $5,000 is awarded by the Academy for Teaching to students in the education field. Eligibility requires a combined SAT score of 1170 RSAT/24 ACT and a GPA of 3.4. 


Also at the celebration, Catawba's Theta Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education inducted 14 new members and installed officers for the 2019-2020 academic year. 

New members inducted and receiving honor cords included the following undergraduate students: Charly Brown, Salisbury, Amy Hedrick, Mooresville,  Kaitlin Koons, Pilot Mountain, Zachary Lecius, Fort Myers, FL, Brittany McGee, Salisbury, Sheila Stewart, Thomasville, Christina Thacker, Mooresville, and Andrea Vance, Salisbury. New officers installed were Zachary Lecius, president, and Kaitlin Koons, treasurer.

Kappa Delta Pi, an International Honor Society in Education, was founded March 8, 1911, at the University of Illinois. Catawba College’s Theta Phi Chapter was installed on Feb. 28, 1958.  Organized to recognize excellence in education, Kappa Delta Pi members honor achievement; strive to a high degree of professional fellowship, leadership, and growth in the field of education; and serve their students and educational community.
