"Go Remote" / Re-Exit Plan

The College will continuously evaluate the rapidly-evolving situation presented by COVID-19, and has developed a decision plan for transition to remote learning, if necessary.  The decision schema will consider factors that are internal to campus, as well as external factors under the guidance of state and local authorities and our local healthcare providers. 

External Factors:  The College will follow the directives of state and local agencies, specifically the Rowan County Health Department, for continuing on-campus activities.

Internal Factors:  The College will monitor factors that indicate our ability to serve the needs and safety of our students, employees, and community members.  These factors include:

  • Students in our designated quarantine/isolation locations on campus
  • Classes that cannot be taught due to faculty illness or quarantine
  • Staff that cannot perform duties due to illness or quarantine
  • Ability to provide essential functions, such as housekeeping and food service
  • Other factors, such as threat or effect of natural disaster and adverse weather.

To provide for more responsive and situational actions, we will operate under four stages of urgency.  Movement from one stage to the next will be determined by the external and internal factors listed above, and will result in actions intended to reduce potential spread of COVID-19 on campus.  The descriptions below of factors and actions of each stage are not all-inclusive. 

  Green
  • Factors:  assumes manageable number of COVID-19 cases and ability to provide quarantine locations and essential functions.
  • Actions: activities of the campus will proceed as currently planned. 
 
  Yellow
  • Factors:  dedicated quarantine spaces 20-50% capacity, some courses unable to be taught due to faculty illness or quarantine, some services affected due to staff illness or quarantine. 
  • Actions:  All courses that are currently fully face-to-face will transition to hybrid, temporary suspension of organized social activities, and Athletics will follow the NCAA guidance for all activities. 
 
  Modified Yellow+ 
  • Factors:  marked increase in the number of students in quarantine, both on and off campus, who are close contacts of positive student cases. 
  • Actions
    1. Suspension of all discretionary events bringing students and others together on campus. This includes in-person student club and organizational meetings and events, in-person campus activities and events, and group trips and activities.
    2. Shifting meal delivery to take out only in the dining hall and Blue 51.
    3. Reinforced and increased athletics protocol, including increased spacing between team members and workout groups at athletics practices and workouts.
    4. Renewed emphasis of Catawba's COVID protocols. 
  • Some Operations Unaltered:
    1. Because we have no known instances of intra-class transmission, Catawba will continue instruction in the current modalities and will NOT transition in-person classes to hybrid or remote when in Modified Yellow+ Status.
    2. Admissions tours will continue as scheduled, as we screen all visitors to campus.
    3. Employees are to continue to report to work as normal. This conversion in operating status has no effect on employee work arrangements.
 
  Orange
  • Factors:  dedicated quarantine spaces is greater than 50% capacity, some courses are unable to be taught due to faculty illness or quarantine, services affected due to staff illness or quarantine, ability to meet demand for sanitizing and cleaning is strained, threat from natural disaster. 
  • Actions:  all classes move to remote delivery for 2 weeks; local students who are able will be encouraged to return home for 2 weeks, essential staff only for 2 weeks, suspend all Athletics activities for 2 weeks or in accordance with NCAA guidance. 
 
  Red
  • Factors:  dedicated quarantine space reaches or exceeds 100% capacity, number of courses unable to be taught due to faculty illness or quarantine, unable to provide services due to staff illness or quarantine, unable to meet the needs of students in quarantine, severe effects of natural disaster/weather. 
  • Actions:  All classes move to remote delivery for remainder of semester, all students who are able will be asked to return home, essential staff only on campus, suspend all Athletics activities for remainder of semester or in accordance with NCAA guidance.
