History

History

Catawba College was established in 1851 in the town of Newton, serving as a high school during the Civil War years and awarding its first college degrees in 1889. It became a coeducational institution in 1890 and saw its first female graduate in 1893. The campus in Newton was closed in 1923 and re-opened in Salisbury in 1925. Since then, Catawba has built a tradition of successful graduates who honor the College by their achievements as physicians, attorneys, teachers and college professors, corporate executives, actors and musicians, nurses, social workers, and others who contribute to society in a meaningful variety of ways.
