Profile
Dr. Ariel Cintrón-Arias earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Cornell University. He completed postdoctoral research training with joint appointments at the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute and North Carolina State University. He then joined the faculty of East Tennessee State University, where he served in various roles for 16 years. One of them was as a principal investigator in programs funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Security Agency, where workforce development at the interface of computational mathematics had main emphasis. Dr. Cintron-Arias also has had adjunct faculty appointments at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth and Central Piedmont Community College.
Dr. Cintrón-Arias has formal training in computational mathematics. Specifically, with methods of mathematical modeling for infectious diseases, sensitivity and uncertainty analyses, and applied machine learning. In his instructional practice he showcases those technical domains while blending flipped classrooms with project-based learning. In recent years, Dr. Cintrón Arias has become more involved with aligning computational thinking standards in undergraduate curriculum at the interface of data science and cloud technologies.
