Dr. Barry R. Sang is Professor Professor Emeritus of Religion at Catawba College where taught from 1985 to 2023. He chaired the department several times from 1994 through 2023, and served as dean of two of Catawba’s previous divisions. He holds a B.A. from Carroll College in Wisconsin; an M.Div. from Colgate Rochester Theological Seminary in New York state; and an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from Drew University in New Jersey. Dr. Sang maintains ordinations in the American Baptist Churches, USA, and in the Presbyterian Church, USA. His special fields of interest are New Testament studies, Old Testament studies, and process theology. He has published an interactive text book in Old Testament studies.

At Catawba Dr. Sang played major roles in several of the College's major programs. The College granted him the following awards: the Swink Prize for Outstanding Classroom Teaching; the William R. Weaver Professor of Humanities; the Algernon Sidney Sullivan award for Christian character; and the Trustees' Award for outstanding contributions to the College. Dr. Sang regularly taught courses in biblical studies, world religions, the phenomenology of religion, contemporary Christian theology, and French horn. He has been a mainstay in Catawba’s Wind Ensemble and Brass Ensemble.

In 2002-5 Dr. Sang wrote successful grant proposals to the Lilly Endowment, Inc., for $2.5 million, leading to the foundation and continuation of the Lilly Center for Vocation and Values at Catawba College.

Dr. Sang was Faculty Director for Catawba's Reaffirmation of Accreditation in 2004-06 . In 2015, as Accreditation Liaison to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, Dr. Sang led Catawba through the most successful decennial review in its history. He continues to chair on-site and off-site review committees for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. He is married to Kathy Hanna Sang.
