Catawba College (“Catawba”) seeks applicants for its Area Coordinator for Housing and Residence Life position. The Area Coordinator is pivotal in fostering a vibrant and supportive residential community at Catawba College. This live-in position oversees the day-to-day operations of assigned residential areas, providing leadership in student development, crisis management, and community building. The coordinator supervises a team of Resident Assistants (RAs) and collaborates closely with campus partners to enhance the overall student experience within the residential community.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Directly supervise and facilitate Catawba Resident Assistant's recruitment, training, and
- Consistent with the Catawba Mission and Student Affairs priorities, create and implement a team development plan that includes, but is not limited to, individual meetings, weekly staff meetings, and team bonding activities.
- Supervise, train, and mentor Resident Assistants (RAs) to ensure adequate support and programming within assigned residential areas.
- Develop and implement community-building initiatives and residence hall programs that promote student engagement, inclusivity, and personal growth.
- Serve as a conduct officer, adjudicating student conduct cases and maintaining accurate documentation by college policies.
- Coordinate residence hall openings and closings, including room inspections, key distribution, and related administrative tasks.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies and serve in an on-call rotation to support students and enforce policies.
- Collaborate with Facilities Management for maintenance and custodial needs within residential facilities.
- Assist with selecting, training, and evaluating RAs and other residence life staff
- Participate in departmental and campus-wide committees and initiatives as
- Participate in on-call rotation with other Residence Life and Housing staff; work cooperatively with Academic Affairs, Chaplain Office, Catawba Public Safety, Student Health Services, Catawba counselors, and other campus and community resources to assist in emergencies and crises.
- Contribute to an effective unit by completing special projects and performing other duties assigned by the Dean of Students.
- On Call & Crisis Management
- Serve in on-call crisis management rotation for the
- Provide emergency response and crisis management as needed on campus and for staff.
- Develop a residence hall on-call program with the Resident Assistants to ensure 24-hour, seven-day coverage in the residence halls
- Other Duties as Assigned by the President and/or the Executive Vice President and Provost or Dean of Students
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to build solid and healthy relationships with students, creating a collaborative environment with students at the center.
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability with high student/customer service in addressing student/family issues or concerns.
- A collaborative individual working with faculty and staff from various Catawba departments, capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with facilities, the conference center, and other departments.

ABOUT CATAWBA:
Founded in 1851 in Newton, North Carolina, Catawba was started by German pioneers who had traveled from eastern Pennsylvania to settle in the Haw, Yadkin, and Catawba Rivers valleys. The Catawba College Department of Sport & Health Sciences invites applications for Assistant/Associate Professor of Exercise Science, starting date of Spring/Fall 2026. The candidate will provide instruction for a rapidly growing exercise science program. The position will require advising exercise science majors, coordinating internships and experiential learning, and curriculum maintenance.
Faculty will be responsible for didactic and clinical instruction using evidence-based methodology. The faculty will also be responsible for the recruitment and advisement of a diverse student population, and will be expected to serve on departmental committees, engage in scholarship and service activities of the College.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree required, (doctoral degree preferred) from an accredited institution
- Experience using a variety of instructional strategies, such as face-to-face delivery, online, hybrid, experiential learning, and field-based experiences to engage students with diverse experiences
- Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to quality teaching
- Incorporate active learning strategies and effectively use instructional technology to support classroom instruction

General Description
The Assistant Director of Retention, Persistence, and Academic Success reports to the Director and provides management, expertise, and an equity-minded perspective on all aspects of student success at Catawba College.
This role manages key functions of the Student Success Center—including success coaching, advising, supplementary instruction, and testing—while cultivating a cohesive, high-performing team. The Assistant Director uplifts and supports staff, fosters trust and accountability, and models professionalism and collaboration.
The position also supports retention-related committees, develops training for campus partners, and ensures services reflect Catawba’s mission and commitment to equity. The Assistant Director works across Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Athletics, and other units to coordinate student support, while leading initiatives to improve persistence, goal completion, and graduation rates.
Essential Job Functions
- Manage Student Success Center staff and operations, ensuring clear expectations, accountability, and a respectful, inclusive team culture.
- Provide regular coaching, feedback, and professional development for direct reports.
- Support the CARES team in identifying and addressing at-risk students through coordinated, cross-functional action.
- Oversee a comprehensive set of academic support programs including success coaching, tutoring, supplemental instruction, and workshops serving diverse courses and levels.
- Partner with the Director to set short- and long-term strategies for coaching and retention, engaging staff in shared goal-setting and continuous improvement.
- Build strong collaborations within the Student Success Center (Career Services, Academic Access-ability) and with other campus offices.
- Work with faculty directors of the Writing Center and SMART Center to align support services.
- Analyze and report on non-retention trends, recommending strategies to address identified gaps.
- Develop and distribute academic support resources, both in-person and online.
- Track and assess the impact of academic support programs, using results to improve services.
- Maintain relationships with the Assistant Directors of Internships and Career Planning, the Center for International Studies, and Academic Access-ability.
- Represent Student Success at college events, modeling professionalism and collegiality.

Position Status: Full-Time, Twelve (12) Month Position
Directly Reports To: Director of Public Safety

JOB OBJECTIVE: To ensure the safety of all persons and property on the Catawba College campus.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Understand and follow all campus security, safety, and emergency procedures
- Maintain familiarity and a positive working relationship with all members of the campus community
- Maintain a positive working relationship with all emergency services to include fire, police, and rescue
- Notify the Director of Public Safety and designated Catawba administrators of emergency situations occurring on or near campus
- Act as on the scene liaison between the Catawba and city/county emergency services
- Review, understand, and pass information pertinent to department daily operations via the daily shift log and shift change briefings
- Respond to all calls for service, assistance, and emergencies and provide escort as needed
- Responsible for locking and unlocking buildings in a timely manner
- Provide regular and frequent foot patrols of the interior and exterior of campus buildings and monitor all campus grounds and roadways. Make mobile patrols of campus as needed
- Responsible for completion of all incident reports, daily log entries, and/or any other written information pertaining to events occurring during the officer’s shift
- Monitor all campus parking areas and enforces traffic and parking regulations as needed
- Enforce Catawba policies, regulations, and procedures. Assist and participate in judicial hearings as needed
- Report security, safety, health, and/or fire hazard issues to appropriate personnel
- Transmit emergency notifications to the campus community as necessary
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Safety and/or other designated Catawba administrators
JOB STANDARDS:
- Position requires a high school diploma or GED certificate. Preference given to those with a college degree in a related field
- Position requires excellent interpersonal and customer service oriented skills
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule as needed
- Must be 21 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license
- Minimum of two (2) years work related experience in security, campus security, or law enforcement
- Classified as an emergency response employee and as such must be able to report to campus within forty-five (45) minutes of driving in the event of an emergency situation
- Successful candidate expected to exhibit and maintain adequate physical fitness for the position
EQUIPMENT USED: Telephones, emergency radios, computer, printer, copier/fax machine, golf carts, patrol car, and other public safety and/or law enforcement equipment issued by Catawba
