About Catawba College
Founded in 1851 and perennially ranked as one of the best colleges in the South, Catawba College provides an education focused on an institutional philosophy of a liberal education, which entails a broad range of knowledge, intellectual and practical skills, and individual and social responsibility fostered and developed in all academic programs. Catawba is a learning community that provides students unique opportunities to explore vocation, helping students to consider their calling, their passions, and their purpose as they prepare to reach their highest potential.
Catawba College’s scenic campus is located within the historic piedmont city of Salisbury, North Carolina, (pop. 36,000), part of the greater Charlotte metropolitan area. Spread out over 276 wooded acres and 41 buildings, the campus is a beautiful blend of neogothic architecture set on a shaded hillside adjacent to the Center for the Environment facility and the ecological preserve. Centrally located, it is only two hours away from the Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina and four hours away from some of the best beaches on the Atlantic Coast. Salisbury is a 45-minute drive from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States (10th nationwide in passenger traffic in 2022) with links to numerous domestic and overseas destinations.
Catawba offers 70 academic majors to nearly 1,400 students hailing from 34 U.S. states and 19 foreign countries. Like the student body, the Catawba faculty, constituting nearly 90 full-time members, is broadly diverse. It embodies a significant range of opinion and philosophy, founded in study at many of the nation's leading colleges and universities. Thirty-six percent of students identify as first-generation students, 45 percent of students are Pell-eligible, and 45 percent of first-year students identify as non-white (21 percent African American, 11 percent Hispanic). All Catawba students receive financial aid, and a significant proportion of financial need is met by the College for most students. The first-year retention rate for full-time undergraduates is 70 percent. Within six months of graduation, 97 percent of Catawba alumni are employed professionally or enrolled in graduate school.
Catawba College enjoys a strong financial picture. The College's endowment of $580 million supports the College's educational and service activities. In August 2024, the College received a $200 million anonymous gift to its endowment, the third transformative gift of its kind in three years. Two-thirds of the annual distributions of this gift will provide unrestricted funding for the college, and one-third is directed to programs that support environmental education and sustainability, a longstanding strategic initiative of the institution. The per-student endowment approaches $500,000, which is among the highest in the Southeast.
The College is undergoing a time of significant development on campus, with multiple projects underway that align with their commitment to sustainability, community, and student experience. The Smokestack, a reclamation of the College’s old coal power plant, will be renovated according to Living Building Challenge stands and will provide an additional 10,000 square feet of space for student activities. A new 150-bed residence hall is scheduled for completion in August 2026, and two additional residence halls are being renovated. LOCATION AND HISTORY
Catawba College is located in Salisbury, North Carolina, a historic Southern city situated between the greater Charlotte area and the triad area of Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem. In Salisbury, community members find both a quiet countryside filled with wineries and pick-your-own farms and a bustling downtown district with breweries, historic trolleys, a thriving arts scene, and more. Salisbury is home to the Lee Street Theatre, the Meroney Theater, the Norvell Theater, and the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra. Situated in the Piedmont region of beautiful North Carolina, residents enjoy four mild seasons and plenty of opportunities to explore the area's natural treasures.
Catawba College was established in 1851 in the town of Newton, a center of commerce in the foothills of western North Carolina. The region was settled in the 1740s by German pioneers who had traveled from eastern Pennsylvania to inhabit the valleys of the Haw, Yadkin, and Catawba rivers. The high value these pioneers placed on education was visible during the 1848 meeting of the German Reformed Classis at St. Matthew's Arbor, where it was suggested that the Education Society "found a college of our own in our own midst." Catawba bears the name of the native American tribe associated with the county of the college’s founding and the river flowing nearby. Following a hiatus during the Civil War, Catawba resumed operations under its original charter and awarded its first college degrees in 1889. Catawba moved from Newton, North Carolina, to its current location in Salisbury in 1925.
Catawba seeks to serve the Salisbury-Rowan County community through its programs and services. The Robertson College-Community Center, a facility built as a joint venture with the community over 37 years ago, houses the Shuford School of Performing Arts and showcases musical and theatre productions from the College and the community. Similarly, the College's athletic facilities have been enhanced by the local community and are available to local residents as well as students. Students have many opportunities to be an active part of a larger community while they are enrolled at Catawba and find opportunities for community interaction, service, and personal development.
LEADERSHIP
The Catawba College Board of Trustees elected Dr. David P. Nelson as its 24th President on March 11, 2020. A first-generation college student, Dr. Nelson received his Ph.D. in Theology from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Master of Music and Bachelor of Music from Hardin-Simmons University.
Prior to joining Catawba College, President Nelson served as the President of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Provost of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and Dean of the Faculty at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Throughout his administrative career, he has remained active in the classroom, teaching religious studies, philosophy, and music courses.

As a key member of the EVP/Provost leadership team, the new Dean of Students will play a key team leadership role in the implementation of the strategic plan, which provides a framework in which to define shared goals and build on Catawba's many strengths, allowing the institution to focus the use of its resources and create the conditions for continued success.
The new strategic plan, A College of our Own, embraces creativity and innovation and focuses on Catawba's distinctive strengths to build an even more remarkable place to learn, work, and live. ABOUT CATAWBA:
Founded in 1851 in Newton, North Carolina, Catawba was founded by German pioneers who had traveled from eastern Pennsylvania to settle in the valleys of the Haw, Yadkin, and Catawba Rivers. In 1890, Catawba became a coeducational institution, and the first woman to graduate completed her studies in 1893. In 1925, Catawba moved and reopened to its current location in Salisbury, NC, about 45 minutes from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte, two hours from the mountains, and four hours from the beaches.
Today, Catawba College has 41 buildings on a residential campus of 276 wooded acres. It is known for its 189-acre on-campus ecological preserve. Ranked as one of the best colleges in the South, Catawba offers 70 academic majors to approximately 1,300 students from 34 U.S. states and 19 foreign countries. Students are instructed by 80 full-time faculty members, more than 83% of whom hold the highest degree in their field.
Catawba provides an education focused on an institutional philosophy of a liberal education, which entails a broad range of knowledge, intellectual and practical skills, and individual and social responsibility fostered and developed in all academic programs. Catawba is a learning community that provides students with unique opportunities to explore their vocation, helping them consider their calling, passions, and purpose as they prepare to reach their highest potential. Catawba’s mission is to provide “students an education rich in personal attention that blends the knowledge and competencies of liberal studies with career preparation” and to enable “students to reach their highest potential while becoming responsible citizens.” More information about Catawba College is located at www.catawba.edu.
APPLICATION PROCESS: Applicants must submit the following materials in a single file, pdf version only, to employment@catawba.edu:
- Letter of interest;
- Current resume or curriculum vitae; and
- Contact information for three (3) professional references.
Catawba College is an equal-opportunity employer. As such, it is committed to providing equal employment opportunities for all employees, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or veteran status, unless allowed by law and deemed necessary to the college's operation. The College complies with all federal, state, and local non-discrimination laws.
Position Function
A graduate/postdoctoral research associate position is available with the Department of Environment & Sustainability at Catawba College with the Dollar Conservation Ecology Research Group, operating in partnership/collaboration with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Veterinary Division and the DePerno Lab in the College of Natural Resources and North Carolina State University, to determine NC feral swine population density metrics and movement patterns and use those data to enhance State wildlife disease response capabilities and protocols.
Feral swine, Sus scrofa, present an ecological, health, and economic threat across North Carolina landscapes. Understanding the role that feral swine populations and their habitat play in general disease and specifically African Swine Fever (ASF) virus epidemiology has been limited, resulting in a lack of known effective ASF response measures in this North American feral swine population. The risk of an ASF incursion in feral swine becoming endemic, as it has in several other countries, is a very real threat to the US feral and domestic swine herd. To rapidly and efficiently address a potential ASF incursion in feral swine, their movements and population dynamics must be more thoroughly investigated and understood. Current prevention, detection, and response planning for an ASFV incursion, at a state and national level, have been limited based on knowledge gaps in feral swine population dynamics, specifically population distribution, density, and connectivity of subpopulations. These data sets are necessary to develop models that forecast disease spread and assess public policies and guide disease control efforts.
The Research Associate will develop datasets from source populations of feral swine in at least two NC river basins, Yadkin-PeeDee and Cape Fear, and potentially the Neuse, where a combination of growing feral swine populations, ongoing evidence of disease in feral populations, and the presence of commercial swine facilities further amplify the threat that feral swine pose to the State’s ecology and economy.
The Research Associate will determine population density metrics and movement parameters of feral swine through camera trapping with appropriate analytical methods. This information will be combined with GPS and GIS monitoring of collared feral swine to produce population connectivity metrics. The overall model, report, and resources will be shared with animal health officials in both our state and neighboring states, Tennessee and South Carolina, to enhance regionwide response planning, develop models that forecast disease spread and prepare for the arrival and response to large-scale diseases like ASF in a harmonized way.
Outside of this position and its funding, the hired candidate may also have the opportunity to teach or instruct courses in Catawba College’s Department of Environment & Sustainability.
Anticipated Division of Time
70% Research (including GIS, field work, modeling, and analysis), 15 % data collection, 15% writing & reporting
Requirements
Masters (PhD strongly preferred) in wildlife and/or biology, natural resources, ecology, or a related field, with a focus on quantitative methods in population demographics, density, and dynamics. Strong fieldwork, GIS, camera trapping, mathematical, modeling, and programming skills, with demonstrated proficiency in camera trapping and wildlife movement analytical tools. Experience in population estimation models required. Experience with satellite collaring, MetOcean, and Movebank preferred. Excellent writing and public/personal communication skills. Capacity for independent work under limited direct supervision, while prioritizing collaborative awareness and communication, expected.
Supervision
Position will be supervised by and directly report to Dr. Luke Dollar, Chair and Professor of Environment & Sustainability and Program Lead for the Catawba College Feral Swine Project at Catawba College. Collaborative reporting to and guidance by Dr. Catherine Harris, Director of Livestock Health Programs for the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and Dr. Christopher DePerno, Professor for the College of Natural Resources and Coordinator of the Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology Program at NC State University, will also be incorporated.
Salary
(Determined by qualifications and terminal degree)/year plus Catawba College staff benefits. Appointment date not to exceed December 31, 2026. Possibility of extension, pending additional funding. Opportunity, completely outside this position and job description, to teach as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environment & Sustainability at Catawba College, exists, pending qualifications and experience. Start date is as soon as possible once a qualified candidate is identified

The first-year retention rate for full-time undergraduates is 73 percent.
The Smokestack, a reclamation of the College’s old coal power plant, will be renovated according to Living Building Challenge stands and will provide an additional 10,000 square feet of student space. A new 150-bed residence hall is scheduled for completion in August 2026, and two additional residence halls are being renovated.
