Horizons Unlimited staff and Catawba alumni Summer Howerton and Spring Roseman brought nine campers to Catawba for the day, and Dr. Jim Hand, Brandon Auton, and Sarah Sweatt of Catawba’s School of Health Sciences and Human Performance facilitated the activities for the kids on campus. Catawba alumna Kelly Crews is also a staff member with Horizons Unlimited.
Sport Science Campers learned about improving athletic performance, and started their day with stretches, therapy band work, and ladders. In Catawba’s Exercise Science labs, they discovered ways that technology is used to improve the performance of athletes, with Hand assisting them to try a variety of training equipment. They enjoyed healthy alternatives to their everyday snacks, learning about nutrition, and exploring the world of Health Science in the Nursing Lab, learning about heart rate, blood pressure, and more. After visiting the various labs and facilities on campus, the campers enjoyed running on the track at Shuford Stadium. One of their favorite parts of the day was meeting “Billy” - a teaching mannequin that looks like a young boy about their age in the Nursing Lab. Billy communicated with them as they asked him questions, and they got to feel his breath.
This is the first year Horizons Unlimited has offered a Sport Science camp among its summer camp programs, with the plan to encourage future athletes to participate. Nine children from area schools ranging in age from 8 to 12 years participated this year. Horizons Unlimited offers children a variety of summer camp and day camp experiences in addition to its regular programming, promoting camp opportunities via email, and flyers, along with their Facebook and Instagram pages.
“Horizons Unlimited staff is grateful for the opportunity to build this connection with Catawba College and to have had the opportunity to allow students to explore the different aspects of becoming a great athlete and teammate,” said Summer Howerton, Science and Communications Specialist for Horizons Unlimited, about the campers’ day on campus.
