Students will gain experience conducting aerial small plane surveys, drone training, water sampling, paddling, observations of point and nonpoint source pollution including hog and poultry CAFOs. Additionally, students will have opportunities to engage with water keepers, farmers, documentary filmmakers, community members, and watermen.
This is the first year of the partnership between Catawba College and the Waterkeeper Alliance. It is expected this will be offered yearly in Spring/Summer going forward.
The Waterkeeper movement began in 1966, on New York’s Hudson River when fishermen discovered that industrial polluters were destroying the river’s ecosystem and the fishermen’s way of life. Today, the movement has grown to more than 300 international Waterkeeper groups who patrol and protect more than 2.5 million square miles of rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways. Waterkeepers defend and enforce clean water laws through legal advocacy and community engagement to fight for clean and abundant water for all people and the planet.
Applications will be reviewed by a committee of Waterkeeper Alliance staff and Catawba College Faculty. Applications are rolling and will be reviewed until the cohort is filled. Completed applications should be submitted to Dr. Andrew Jacobson via email at ajacobso19@catawba.edu
