Catawba College Grad Ashley Johnson Named Davie County Beginning Teacher of the Year

Catawba College is proud to announce that Ashley Johnson, a 2023 graduate with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Secondary Education, has been named the Davie County Beginning Teacher of the Year for the 2024-2025 academic year. The award was announced on August 23 and recognizes her teaching excellence and contributions to Davie County High School.

Davie County officials praised Ashley for her effective teaching methods. “Ashley structures her classes so that all students are able to master content and succeed,” a spokesperson from the county stated.

Johnson completed her student teaching at Davie County High School during the 2022-2023 academic year and has since joined the school's faculty as a full-time mathematics teacher. Her commitment to student success and ability to structure classes for diverse learning needs quickly earned her the respect and admiration of her students and colleagues.

"My time at Catawba provided great support as a student and set me up for success as a first-year teacher,” said Johnson. “I had a fantastic student teaching experience, which led to the successful year I’ve had at Davie County High School."

Kim Creamer, Catawba’s School of Education Dean, added, “Ashley exceeded expectations during her studies at Catawba. She spent extra time focused on learning how to meet the needs of various learners. It is exciting to see her applying these efforts in her classroom."
