Clinical Mental Health Counseling Student Shines on Radio Interview

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Catawba College is making an impact on the local community.

Leslie Newsome, a second-year student in the graduate program, recently was invited to speak on the Joy Berlin Show, a radio talk show aired on WSJS in Winston-Salem. Leslie is currently completing her Counseling Practicum with House Calls Counseling in Winston-Salem, and through this supervised experience she is working directly with a variety of clients. One specific aspect of her clinical experience is partnering with a program called City of Wellness, which connects Leslie with individuals with homelessness in the downtown Winston-Salem area. This population typically has minimal access to mental health services, creating a significant obstacle to potential employment. “We are very proud of Leslie and the work she is doing in the field as a counselor in training,” reports Dr. Chad Betters, Chair of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. “Leslie is not only demonstrating effective clinical delivery to her clients - she is living out the pillar of Service we value here at Catawba, specifically by seeking the opportunity to work with the clientele through House Calls’ relationship with City of Wellness.”

All students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program complete two semesters of supervised fieldwork. This includes a 100 hour Practicum and a 600 hour Internship. All fieldwork is supervised by both a faculty supervisor and a site supervisor to ensure quality in counseling service delivery, which is overseen by Dr. Brianna Randall, Fieldwork Coordinator of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.

Any inquiries regarding the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program should be directed to Program Chair Dr. Chad Betters at cbetters19@catawba.edu.
