Catawba College Holds Annual Day of Service

In September, Catawba College held its annual Day of Service, bringing together 574 students, faculty, and staff to serve the Rowan County community through numerous projects in collaboration with 27 community partners.

Catawba’s Day of Service is the first “Pillar Day” of the 2024-2025 academic year, a tradition deeply rooted in the College’s identity. The Day of Service not only exemplifies the institution’s dedication to academic excellence but also showcases its core values of compassion, community, and service. Catawba will participate in three additional Pillar Days: Day of Character, Day of Culture, and Day of Scholarship.

The level of engagement between Catawba volunteers and the community partners illustrates the special bond between the college and the local community.

Activities for the Day of Service included various volunteer opportunities, including tutoring and mentoring students, local food bank and shelter support, park cleanups, tree planting, beautification projects, and senior citizen outreach.

The event's success was made possible in part by the generous support of Salisbury-Rowan Schools, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Catawba Athletics, First Presbyterian Church, Catawba Student Development, and Catawba’s Lilly Center, which provided transportation for volunteers to the various service sites.

Catawba expresses its sincere gratitude to its 27 community partners who played a pivotal role in making the Day of Service a reality. Their dedication to building a stronger, more vibrant Rowan County community is a testament to the power of collaboration and shared values. Community partners include Isenberg Elementary, West Rowan Elementary, Knollwood Elementary, China Grove Middle School, Pedal Factory, Nazareth Children's Home, Rowan Helping Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, Spencer Transportation Museum, Power Cross, Partners in Learning, Salisbury Academy, Piedmont Players, Main Street Market Place, Beautification Projects at the Chapel, Ecological Preserve, Veterans Affairs, Terrie Hess Child Advocacy Center, Autumn Care, Life Choices Rowan, Greenway Clean-Up, Saving Grace Farms, Lee Street Theatre, City of Salisbury Litter Sweeps at Memorial Park, Oakwood Cemetery, and Kelsey Scott Park, Voter Registration Table, Lutheran Services, and Next Generation Academy.
