Catawba College Welcomes New Students to Kick Off Its 175th Academic Year

Catawba College opened the 2025–26 academic year with energy, optimism, and momentum, welcoming more than 450 new undergraduate, graduate, and online students this fall. The incoming class represents a 5% increase over last year, underscoring the growing strength of Catawba’s reputation as a college where students thrive academically, personally, and professionally.

The incoming class brings with it diverse backgrounds, talents, and aspirations. Students represent 24 states and 25 countries, reinforcing Catawba’s reach and appeal as a college deeply rooted in Salisbury yet connected to the world.

Catawba officially opened its new academic year at Opening Convocation, held on Tuesday. The first day of class was Wednesday, August 20th.

Catawba President David P. Nelson delivered the convocation address, reminding attendees of the Catawba ideal: Scholarship with Character and Culture for Service, along with its motto and guiding principles.

“Catawba’s Ideal was very much in mind as the college opened its doors,” shared Nelson. “During the early years on this campus, we see evidence of the Ideal as a guiding light for the College, and among the “aims” of the college curriculum at that time – and to this day – is the education of students to be responsible members of their community, to be good citizens.” He encouraged students to be good citizens on campus, in the local community, and in the nation.

Nelson reminded everyone of the milestones Catawba is celebrating in 2025 and 2026: 60 years of integration and 100 years in Salisbury in 2025, along with 175 years as a college in 2026.

Nelson concluded with a request, “The convocation message is a call – so this is about vocation – this is about our calling to be good citizens and good neighbors – on our campus, in our community, in our state, and in our nation. Our call is to care for one another – everyone we encounter along the way, everyone with whom we share this campus community, everyone with whom we share this nation, and this world. Please don’t be indifferent. Use your attention and energy in ways that make a real difference for the good in the lives of your neighbors. As we open this academic year, pursue your own scholarship, with character and with culture for service.”

As the new academic year begins, Catawba continues to invest in student success through new programs, campus enhancements, and expanded opportunities for hands-on learning. From sustainability leadership initiatives to innovative academic pathways, the College remains committed to helping students discover their purpose and see multiple pathways forward.
