Catawba College Students and Faculty Present Research on Thrift Store Consumer Behavior at ACRA Conference

Published:
Catawba College proudly announces that Ketner School of Business student Hannah Wagenaar and faculty members Dr. Jennifer Yurchisin and Dr. Joanna Trammell presented their collaborative research at the prestigious American Collegiate Retailing Association (ACRA) Conference on March 14, 2025.

Their research study, titled “Consumers’ Intention to Purchase from a Thrift Store Associated with an Animal Shelter,” explored the growing intersection of ethical consumption, secondhand retail, and nonprofit partnerships. The project examined how consumers' attitudes, perceived value, and sense of social responsibility influence their intentions to shop at thrift stores affiliated with animal shelters—businesses that contribute to both environmental sustainability and animal welfare.

The ACRA Conference brings together leading scholars and students in the field of retail to foster excellence in education and research. The organization is committed to enhancing the quality of retail teaching, encouraging innovation, and strengthening collaboration between academia and the retail industry.

“We’re incredibly proud of Hannah, Dr. Yurchisin, and Dr. Trammell for their meaningful contribution to this year’s ACRA conference,” said Dr. Imran Chowdhury, Dean of the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business at Catawba College. “Their work is a great example of the high-impact research and experiential learning we champion at Catawba.”

The study not only highlighted current retail trends but also emphasized the powerful connection between consumer behavior and purpose-driven business models. The team’s findings have the potential to inform marketing strategies for nonprofit retail ventures and contribute to a more sustainable and compassionate consumer culture.
