“These events are about more than just good food, said Sarah Trefz, Environmental Communications Intern for Catawba’s Center for the Environment (CENV). “They’re a fun and memorable way to show how electric vehicles like the Ford Lightning can change the way we think about energy and sustainability.”
A Cookout Powered by Innovation
The Lightning’s onboard power system energizes two griddles and an air fryer—perfect for sizzling burgers and crisping fries—while its built-in cooler keeps Salisbury’s famous Cheerwine ice-cold. Surprisingly, a full cookout uses just 2% of the truck’s battery.
CENV students, interns, and staff use these events to connect with guests, answer questions, and highlight the sustainability and efficiency of EVs.
“People are amazed when they realize how little energy it takes,” noted Markiian Ivaniv, Software and Solar Innovation Intern at Catawba’s CENV.
Community Highlights
- Summer Explorations Day Camps: Students in grades 3–12 explored ecological and environmental science while enjoying the Lightning’s first summer cookout. Campers from The Bees Knees: Pollinators in Action (grades 6–8) capped off a day of learning about bees with burgers and fries powered by the truck.
- The BUDD Group: As a thank-you to the maintenance and landscaping team that keeps Catawba’s campus beautiful, the CENV hosted a special cookout featuring burgers, fries, and chicken tenders. Staff members were amazed by the Lightning’s unique capabilities.
- Rowan Chamber Dragon Boat Festival: At the 11th annual festival on High Rock Lake, the Lightning fueled both appetites and energy for Catawba’s boat-racing team, which earned a thrilling second-place finish.
Looking Ahead
CENV plans to host more Ford Lightning cookouts throughout the year, combining hands-on sustainability education with community connection.
“These events highlight how innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand,” added Noah Upchurch, Sustainability Program Director. “Whether it’s powering a cookout or starting a conversation about the future of transportation, the Ford Lightning is helping us inspire our campus and community.”
