Catawba College Student Gains Hands-On Experience Through Salisbury Farmer’s Market Internship

Catawba College is proud to highlight the accomplishments of Ashley Fortin, a student in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business, who completed a rewarding summer 2025 internship with the Salisbury Farmer’s Market under the guidance of market supervisor Leigh Ann Powlas.

During her internship, Fortin contributed to the continued success and community engagement of the market by taking on a wide range of responsibilities. Her duties included photographing vendors, guests, and products; creating engaging graphics and sample social media posts; and interacting with guests to answer questions and provide support.

In addition, Fortin designed feedback forums to address concerns and provide insights for improving the market experience. She also managed vendor coordination in the absence of her supervisor, showcasing leadership and problem-solving skills. Her role allowed her to network with community members, strengthen market visibility, and contribute to its welcoming atmosphere.

Fortin was supported throughout her internship by her Catawba College faculty mentor, Dr. James W. Slate, Associate Professor of Economics in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business and Editorial Review Board Member for the Business Education Innovation Journal. Dr. Slate provided guidance to connect her academic learning with her professional experience, ensuring she gained both practical and career-ready skills.

“This season, the Salisbury Rowan Farmers Market had the pleasure of hosting interns from Catawba College to assist with our Power of Produce (PoP) kids club program. We were especially fortunate to have Ashley (Ash) Fortin with us. I am incredibly thankful for all her help with the PoP club activities, her excellent photo-taking skills, and the fantastic graphics she provided, which I will continue to use on our social media.

“Having Ash and the support of Catawba College has truly been a blessing to me and to our first year hosting a kids club at the Farmers Market,” said Leigh Ann Powlas, Market Supervisor. “Her creativity, professionalism, and initiative demonstrated the value of experiential learning and the importance of connecting students with their community.” This internship is another example of Catawba College’s commitment to providing experiential learning opportunities that prepare students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Fortin’s work at the Salisbury Farmer’s Market exemplifies the college’s mission to equip students with both the professional skills and the community-centered mindset needed for future leadership.
