Catawba College Presents a Midsummer Night's Dream

Catawba College’s Shuford School of Performing Arts presents its Shakespearean play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at the Bell Tower Green in Salisbury on April 5th at 11:30 am and 4:30 pm, and on April 6th at 2:30 pm. A performance will also be held on Catawba’s campus in Hedrick Little Theatre on April 11th at 7:30 pm. The performances are free and open to the public.

Catawba Professor of Theatre Arts Dr. Beth Homan brings Shakespeare’s classic comedy to life with this production. It tells the story of four young lovers who face the prospect of an unhappy marriage and escape into a magical forest. Nearby, a fairy king and queen are engaged in a war of wills while a crew of amateur actors rehearses for a royal wedding. One wily sprite intent on mischief has orders to intervene. What could go wrong, you may ask? Well, you will have to see for yourself!

Sophomore Jovey McFarlend, who serves as the Stage Manager, Music Director, and Assistant Director for this show, stated, “As someone who wears many hats for our Midsummer production, I am incredibly excited to see this piece of work transform in each space we inhabit. Being in Bell Tower Green and navigating a brand-new performance space has given the actors a new sense of experimentation, and it has been a joy to see them adapt to the challenges of performing an outdoor production. As music director, I have also had the pleasure of leading the charge on arranging live music for preshow and intermission, and this is something I cannot wait to see altogether with the show itself. Our actors have had a blast putting together each song, with close ties to their characters and the show's themes, and I am excited for audiences to see their musical talents on top of their acting.”

Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and join us for this dazzling production at Bell Tower Green.
