Thomas Nailen of Asheville was elected as Governor of the American Legion Tar Heel Boys' State Wednesday, June 24 during the week-long event held at Catawba College. Thomas is a rising senior at Carolina Day School. He is the son of Elliott and Michelle Nailen of Asheville, N.C.
Thomas Nailen credits his success over the week to a desire to lead and represent the values of North Carolina men. While first being elected Mayor of his Boys' State city, Nailen decided to move further along the political process and received the support of his peers.
The American Legion sponsors a week-long program which mimics the realities of National, State, and local government. Delegates, known as citizens, run for offices across a statewide slate of candidates. The highest office, Governor, represents the interests and ideas of the citizens of the state.
This is the seventh consecutive year that the event has been held on Catawba's campus and approximately 275 participants, all rising high school seniors from North Carolina, are involved.
