A "haven of peace and tranquility?" Afghanistan?! That's insane, you may be thinking, but then ... you haven't seen professional photographer Luke Powell's stunning photographs of this central Asian nation.
Luke Powell is a North Carolina native and a 1969 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He went on to acquire a degree from Yale Divinity School in 1972.
Powell's photographs have been exhibited in over 100 one-person shows, including the Smithsonian's Sackler Gallery and the Royal Ontario Museum, as well as in Manesh Hall Moscow, the Fotographie Forum in Frankfurt, and at the United Nations in Geneva. Since 2000, he has photographed UN mine clearance and aid projects in Afghanistan and Mozambique. His work, The Afghan Folio, is scheduled for the reopening of the National Gallery in Kabul. He lives in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
At this year's March edition of the Catawba College Community Forum, Powell will describe his experiences while photographing in Afghanistan. Note that the Forum will be held in Hedrick Little Theatre of the Robertson College Community Center, rather than its usual location. The change in venue was made so that an exhibit of Powell's Afghanistan photographs could be mounted in Peeler Crystal Lounge.
Come hear (and see!) Powell's remarkable presentation at the Catawba College Community Forum, 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 in Hedrick Little Theatre of the Robertson College Community Center on the campus of Catawba College. A reception and viewing of the Afghanistan exhibit will take place in Peeler Crystal Lounge immediately following Powell's presentation. Admission, as always, is free.
