Catawba College's Omicron Chapter of Alpha Chi, the national college honor society, was one of 37 chapters in the nation to earn the society's Star Chapter designation for the 2009-2010 academic year.
The award honors chapters for meeting several criteria: having a faculty sponsor and a student member at the annual national or regional convention; having a student presenter on the convention program; having a national scholarship or fellowship nominee; sponsoring a campus program with an academic emphasis; registering new members; and filing the annual chapter report.
Catawba's Omicron Chapter of Alpha Chi was founded in May 1978 with the induction of 13 members. To date, more than 600 members have been inducted. Alpha Chi inducts no more than the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors from all academic fields. Founded in 1922, the society has active chapters at more than 300 colleges and universities in 45 states and Puerto Rico.
