1974 Catawba College alumnus Randy Southard, current chair of the College's Board of Visitors, is Deputy Chief and a volunteer at the Stokesdale Fire Department in Guilford County.
Southard says he became a firefighter because it was an opportunity to serve in his community.
"I had the same fascination that many young boys had (especially in the 1960's) - to become a fireman," Southard says. "Volunteering with the fire department is an extremely rewarding experience, and an excellent opportunity to serve fellow citizens. It is a terrific place to make lifelong friendships in a VERY unique brotherhood. It also provides great free education. You'll love it!"
Southard served at Stokesdale Fire Department as Volunteer Assistant Chief from 1983 to 1985 and as Volunteer Chief from 1985 to 1993. He has been a Guilford County firefighter for over 44 years and has Firefighter Level I and II training. Southard is also has NIMS 700, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, Chiefs 101 and EMT training.
