Rowan County candidates involved in primaries for the N.C. General Assembly and the Rowan County Board of Commissioners will participate in a candidate forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at Catawba College.
And Post readers have an opportunity now to offer questions for the candidates to field.
Catawba College, the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce and the Salisbury Post are sponsoring the forum, which will be held in the Tom Smith Auditorium of the Ketner School of Business.
The event will be divided into two forums, with state legislative candidates speaking from 6 to 6:50 p.m. and commission candidates speaking from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
All 16 candidates in the May 4 primary races have agreed to participate.
In the county commission race, seats now held by Republicans Jon Barber, Tina Hall and Chad Mitchell are up for election this year. All three are seeking re-election. Other candidates in the Republican primary for those seats are Wayne Bradshaw, Chris Cohen, Carl Dangerfield, Bill Feather, Jim Greene, John J. Greene, Gene Miller and Jim Sides.
The three winners of that primary will face Democrats Leda Belk and Bill Burgin in the general election.
State Sen. Andrew Brock faces challengers Robert Dale Stirewalt and John Ferguson in the Republican primary for the District 34 seat in the state Senate, representing Rowan and Davie counties. No Democrats filed in that race.
Lauren Raper and Harry Warren are in the GOP primary for the District 77 state House seat that represents the northern half of Rowan County. The seat is now held by Rep. Lorene Coates, a Democrat. She is seeking re-election but does not have any primary opposition.
(Rep. Fred Steen, who represents District 76, the other half of Rowan County, is running unopposed in the primary and election.)
Dr. Michael Bitzer of Catawba College will moderate the forums, using questions submitted by Post readers.
