They come from a variety of backgrounds and teach at every level in the school system. Five finalists have been announced for Cabarrus County Schools Teacher of the Year. This week the candidates were observed by the judges. They will now prepare portfolios, and on May 6, the winner will be announced.
Marie Deal

- Social Studies teacher for 11th and 12th grade students at Concord High School.
; - Received her bachelor's degree in history from Catawba College in 2000 and her master's degree in education from Wake Forest University in 2002.
; - "I try and teach my students to be respectful, thoughtful and tolerant citizens locally, nationally and internationally," Deal said.
; - Her advice to new teachers is to respect their elder colleagues.
"They're the best source of information around," Deal said.
