Thanks to the efforts of three Catawba College alumni, the College's athletic training program now has a customized golf cart which will be used for transporting injured athletes. All three alumni are associated RoMedical Care, Inc. and its affiliates – Comadoll, Watts & Ellison Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, and Proformance Physical Therapy.

Alumni Dan Burks '93, director of rehabilitation for Proformance Physical Therapy; Dean Proctor '95, a certified athletic trainer and clinical assistant for Comadoll, Watts & Ellison Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, and Gary Blabon '91, chief executive officer of RoMedical Care, Inc., were on campus in November to make the presentation to Bob Casmus, Catawba's head athletic training director.

The ambulance golf cart, complete with Catawba College logos, was customized by the Salisbury-based National Golf Car. It has a large payload capacity, an extended bed and removable rails which facilitate the safe transportation of injured athletes, even those who must be transported in a prone position, Casmus explained.

Burks, Proctor and Blabon were students who majored in sports medicine at Catawba. That program evolved into the current athletic training program. They wanted to enhance the equipment available for students now enrolled in the program.

"The three of us felt like this was something we wished we had had when were here," Blabon explained. "Catawba gave us a lot and we're in a position now to give back."

A grateful Casmus acknowledged the long-standing, collaborative relationship Catawba has enjoyed with RoMedical Care, Inc. and its affiliates. He said that that relationship has resulted in internships for many athletic training students through the years as well as the outstanding health care for the student-athletes referred for advanced medical care.
