Laurel High School named Todd Sommerville as its new head football coach on Monday. He replaces Brian Moore, who was not retained by the school following the 2010 season.
Sommerville, a physical education teacher at Parkdale High School, served as the Panthers' defensive coordinator the past three years under head coach Rich Holzer, who resigned from Parkdale last week to take the head coaching job at Meade High in Anne Arundel County.
Sommerville played two years at Franklin High School near Baltimore and then four seasons at Catawba College in North Carolina where he majored in physical education. He then later earned his master's degree at The Citadel.
He takes over a Laurel program that has struggled for a decade, going 23-86 since the 2000 season, including a 6-24 mark in the past three seasons under Moore.
