With Catawba students, faculty and staff looking on, Dr. Jay Bolin, assistant professor of biology, ate a scorpion on Friday, December 5th in the Cannon Student Center. Dr. Bolin was the winner of the Catawba Herpetology Club's Eat-A-Bug Contest.

The contest, a fundraiser for this new campus club, allowed students to cast their votes via dollar bills placed in donation jars for their favorite students, professors or "authority figures" to eat either a scorpion or tarantula. Candidates in the Eat-A-Bug Fundraiser included College President Brien Lewis; Dr. Bolin; Dr. Socrates Canete, chemistry; Dr. Paul Baker, mathematics; Dr. Janice Fuller, English; and students Brian Whitson, chemistry, Chris Bolick, Herpetology Club vice president, and Ethan Jarret, lacrosse.

The contest raised around $200 for the Herpetology Club.
