Several Students Compete at Student Leadership Conference and Many Place for Nationals

Six students in the Catawba College Phi Beta Lambda earned awards at the recent North Carolina State Leadership Conference held in Charlotte. They will now compete in national competition.

Catawba PBL Advisor Dr. Pamela Thompson received the Outstanding Local Chapter Advisor award out of all the chapters in North Carolina. The Catawba PBL was given a Gold Star Chapter award, which indicates strong representation and membership during their successful school year, even amidst a global pandemic.

Student awards went to:

  • Jacob Aiton, senior, first in Computer Concepts and second in Cyber Security.
  • Emma Nantz, freshman,second in both Macroeconomics and Management Concepts,
  • Harmony Speer, freshman, Marketing Concepts and second overall.
  • Madison Smith, freshman, first in Accounting Principles.
  • Jade Brooks, President of PBL, third in Cyber-Security and fifth in Computer Concepts. He will compete in Cyber-Security at nationals.
  • Samuel Granill, third in Marketing Concepts and sixth in Organizational Behavior & Leadership. He will compete in Marketing Concepts at nationals.

Dr. Thompson and Angelia Bates, Co-Advisor, said that "PBL is so proud of the students that participated in the club throughout the year and would like to give a special shoutout to those that competed in the and online in April. They competed against top schools in the state, making for a very strong competition. The top three winners of each event qualify for competition at the PBL National Leadership Conference."

Selected members of those that placed in the competition have provided statements in regard to their experience:



Senior Jacob Aiton, Secretary: "I honestly didn't expect to win an event as this was my first time competing, but I'm very proud of myself and of our club!"		  



"This competition was very enjoyable for me, and I felt I learned a lot while partaking. I did not expect to win a title, so I was so grateful and am excited to compete at nationals," said Freshman Emma Nantz, Historian/Reporter, who placed second in both Macroeconomics and Management Concepts, allowing her to accept a seat at Nationals this summer in both events.

  


Madison Smith, freshman, winning first in Accounting Principles: "I was very excited to have had the opportunity to compete in this competition and very honored to win first! I am very proud of Catawba and look forward to seeing how far we can go."		  



Harmony Speer, freshman: "This was my first time competing, and overall it was different from what normally takes place but I enjoy having this experience." She competed in Marketing Concepts and finished second overall, giving her the opportunity to compete at Nationals.

 

 

The chapter held its end-of-year meeting outside in person, the first in-person meeting since last spring, on Wednesday, May 5, 2021, where President Jade Brooks was presented with an engraved gavel for her leadership and dedication to PBL. Other officers were thanked for their involvement and hard work to make the club successful. Nationals will be held in online format this summer on varying dates, depending on the event.
