;;;Members of the Catawba College community commemorated the anniversary of September 11, 2001 at a Campus Worship service held Tues., Sept. 8 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel.

The service was an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives on that day, the survivors and those whose lives were irrevocably impacted on that day. At the end of the service, the approximately 100 students in attendance clasped hands around a single strand of yellow ribbon denoting the bond that is felt as persons who live with the outcomes of this day in the nation's history.   Having looked back and remembered, the ribbon was then cut into short pieces, shaped into loops and pinned upon lapels of the worshippers as a way of signifying a commitment to continue to remember, not to dwell in the past, but to work for a future where peace and living together in harmony and unity might prevail.  

The ribbons will be worn through Friday, September 11, when the Corriher Carillon will peal at the times when the various airplane strikes were made on September 11, 2001.  In an e-mail noting the commemoration signified by the chapel chimes, Dr. Kenneth Clapp, College Chaplain and Senior Vice President, reminded faculty members "to keep in mind that our students were in middle school in 2001 and some explanation as to the reason that the chimes are ringing may be beneficial."

On Sept. 11, the chapel bells will mark these critical moments of theEvents of September 11, 2001:

  • 8:46am - Hijacked passenger jet, American Airlines Flight 11, crashes into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

  • 9:03am - A second hijacked airliner, United Airlines Flight 175, crashes into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

  • 9:43am - American Airlines Flight 77, also hijacked, crashes into the Pentagon.

  • 10:10am - The fourth hijacked plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashes in Somerset County, Pennsylvania
;

Omwake-Dearborn Chapel will be open and available for prayer and meditation throughout the day.911_Program
