VIDEO: Remembering 9-11 » |
The outdoor concert organized by Catawba College senior Brianna Smith of Austin, Texas, is scheduled between 6 and 9:30 p.m. on the lawn of Abernethy Quad. Bands and entertainment featured include 23-19, Katie Bragg, Derek Daisey, and Fisher Street Band, all of which involve Catawba students or musicians with Catawba connections.
According to Smith, the free music is an opportunity "to celebrate creation in the face of a world dominated by destruction." Not only will the concert honor the victims of 9-11 and of war and destruction, but it will celebrate creativity and community. Students are encouraged to bring refreshments and lawn chairs or towels and to come out and enjoy the four acts.
Additionally, collection boxes will be set up all around campus on Monday, Sept. 10, and Tuesday, Sept. 11, where community members are encouraged to bring canned goods for Rowan Helping Ministries. Collection jars will also be set up during lunch hours (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) on Tuesday for collecting cash and loose change which will also be donated to Rowan Helping Ministries.
Since 9/11 falls on a Tuesday this year, Catawba’s community service of remembrance for theEvents of 9/11/2001 will coincide with the regularly scheduled 10:00 p.m. Campus Worship in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. Recognizing that the war in Iraq is in some ways an outgrowth of theEvents of 9/11/2001, College Chaplain Dr. Ken Clapp hopes to use this service as a memorial to all the victims of this war.
Music, meditation and prayer will offer an opportunity for members of the campus community to remember those who have made the supreme sacrifice, to lift in prayer family members of the victims, to reflect on what theseEvents have meant and continue to mean in individual lives and to call upon God to provide strength and guidance for the living of these days.
