Simply by eating lunch in the dining hall on campus, Catawba College students managed to raise almost $150 to benefit victims of the Asian tsunami disaster and the California mudslides. The College’s food service provider, Chartwells, agreed to donate to the relief effort 50 cents for every student who ate lunch Wednesday, January 26, 2005 in the dining hall.
According to Don Nilson, manager of Chartwells, 296 students ate lunch in the dining hall on Jan. 26. Chartwells, a subsidiary of Compass Group, will make a donation totaling $148 to the relief efforts.
Additionally, students associated with the College’s Volunteer Catawba Office solicited tax-deductible donations from faculty and staff members who ate in the dining hall that day. Monies raised in this effort totaled $294, according to Catawba student Joe Brooks, who coordinates the Volunteer Catawba program.
