Connections to Catawba College continue at the Lee Street Theatre & Performing Arts Center in downtown Salisbury with the world premiere of a new play, “The Sugar.” Written by 1995 Catawba alumna Denise Stewart and directed by Catawba Theatre Arts professor emeritus, Dr. Jim Epperson, “The Sugar" plays at 7:30 p.m. April 3-5 and April 10-12.
The production also has other Catawba connections, including former Catawba student and Catawba Conferences employee, Chris Speer of Hamptonville, light and set design; Catawba student, Kassandra Tuttle of Arden, costume designer; and Catawba student, Addison Bevis of Salisbury, performing as the character, Gracie. 2007 Catawba alumnus, Justin Dionne, the managing artistic director of Lee Street Theatre, will perform as the character, Woody, in the production.
“The Sugar” features Sally, a 40ish wellness coach, who sees her life begin to unravel in a comic and moving story. The show has kooky characters, off-beat situations, addictions, obsessions and justice. Theatre-goers will laugh while they and the play seek answers to a number of the topical issues facing society today.
Denise Stewart has enjoyed success as a playwright since graduating from Catawba. Her play, “Dirty Barbie and Other Girlhood Tales,” started at Lee Street Theatre before the move to the new facility, toured the East Coast and played at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland where it was a top 5 recommended pick.
