Catawba College is ranked 86th among 254 colleges and universities in the Southeast touted for delivering the “Best Bang for the Buck,” according to the 2017 Washington Monthly College Guide released during the last week of August. This listing of “Best Bang for the Buck” schools in five geographic regions, the publication says, is to “help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.”
Since 2005, the Washington Monthly has released its annual College Guide and rankings, wherein schools are rated “based on what they are doing for the country.” The publication contends: “It’s our answer to U.S News & World Report, which relies on crude and easily manipulated measures of wealth, exclusivity, and prestige to evaluate schools.”
Washington Monthly’s 2017 Best Bang for the Buck rankings are broken down according to five geographic regions, Northeast, Midwest, Southeast, South and West.
In addition to inclusion on the “Best Bang for the Buck” rankings, Catawba is also included in the Washington Monthly’s College Guide which ranks 1,404 colleges, including public, private non-profit, and for-profit, by category. Catawba is ranked 116th among 227 National Universities offering Bachelor’s degrees. Schools are rated in the guide “based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).”
