This fall, Catawba will offer a new program, Leadership Catawba, tailored specifically to academically talented and highly motivated students. Students who are recipients of the prestigious First Family and Presidential Scholarships are automatically eligible to participate, while others may apply to participate.

The program will offer students opportunities to learn about and practice effective leadership. Additionally, they'll be able to document their leadership training and experience to potential employers and graduate schools through a permanent transcript that records their collegiate experiences. These students also will earn a certificate of merit by acquiring points for their participation. Dr. Barbara Hetrick, vice president and dean of the college, says the new program "will enrich the campus culture through intellectual and service opportunities and help develop future leaders for the campus, professions and the larger community."

A one-hour, elective course, "Profiles in Leadership," will be offered during fall semester. The course, taught by Dr. J. Michael Bitzer, a professor of political science and chair of the Department of History and Politics, will feature a book by Garry Wills, "Certain Trumpets."  During spring semester, Drs. Hetrick and Bitzer will team-teach a class, "Leadership: Theory and Practice."  Catawba College President Dr. Robert Knott will also offer a three-hour presidential leadership seminar for these students.

Working in conjunction with Catawba's Lilly Center for Vocation and Values, the program will offer a series of leadership retreats for students and several leadership roundtable dinners. Students also will have opportunities to participate in leadership internships and externships.

Leadership Catawba students will have preferential status for on-campus leadership positions, including placement as an Alpha, a Resident Advisor, or as a First-Year Seminar Fellow. These students are also eligible to participate in Catawba's 4+4 Mentoring Program, designed to guarantee that students have mentors for the four years they are on campus and for four more years following their graduation. First-Year Seminar instructors and major advisors mentor these students while they are on campus, while successful Catawba College alumni will be paired with Leadership students after their graduation as they begin a career or proceed to an advanced degree program.
