Three members of the Catawba College community took part in the Southeastern Writing Center Association Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, which took place February 10-12. Two students, who work as tutors at the Catawba College Writing Center, Nneka Campbell of Salisbury, a senior English major, and Charlotte Moore of Alexandria, Va., a junior English major, along with Dr. Aaron Butler, who directs the Writing Center and also tutors, traveled to Charleston and presented a poster session entitled: “‘Let’s Think about This’: Students and Tutors Becoming Better Critical Thinkers.”
Moore, Campbell, and Butler also attended several sessions in which speakers discussed writing center practices and initiatives, covering topics such as working with students who learn better through visual approaches rather than verbal ones, determining how students use the advice given during tutoring, the different ways language is used online and the implications those changes have for writing instruction, and tutoring students online as opposed to in person. The Catawba College Writing Center recently began online tutoring for students in the College’s Lifelong Learning Program, who often cannot meet with a tutor in person due to their schedules.
Through the conference presentations and activities, all three members of Catawba’s Writing Center had the opportunity to discuss their work with student and faculty tutors and directors from colleges and universities all over the Southeast.
