In September, Catawba College Associate Professor of Management Dr. Andrew Morris will pedal for the 10th year in the Multiple Sclerosis Bike Tour and he’s challenging both students and colleagues to either join him or support his efforts.  

“The positive energy and the overall tone of this event are almost euphoric,” Morris says of the upcoming Break Away to the Beach fundraiser.   “To have 2,400 people collectively engaged in an act of goodness like this restores one’s faith in humanity.   Indeed, this demonstrated capacity for altruism challenges the notion that it is always about self-interest.”  

“One gets the personal satisfaction of achieving a difficult physical challenge – it is 150-miles on a bicycle in hot/windy conditions, and also of doing something good and noble.   It is a complete win-win situation and is one of the most positive experiences in my and my students’ lives.”  

Break Away to the Beach is a 150-mile bike tour slated September 24-25 to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.   It is the third largest such ride in the country, involving over 2,400 riders and raising $1.8 million dollars last year.   Each cyclist who participates must raise a minimum of $200 to ride.   Sponsorship monies and/or donations can be made online at www.nationalmssociety.org/ncp or sponsorship checks, made payable to the National MS Society, can be mailed to Dr. Morris at Catawba College, Ketner School of Business, 2300 W. Innes Street, Salisbury, NC 28144.  

MS is a disease of the central nervous system that wears away the control a person has over his or her body.   The National MS Society offers people with MS new hopes and different dreams – hope for better treatment or even a cur for the disease and dreams of new ways of living independently with the disease, Morris explains.
