Dr. Philip Acree Cavalier, associate professor of English who has served at Catawba College as director of the First-Year Experience and assistant dean, has been promoted to Dean of General Education.
In his new role, Acree Cavalier will oversee a task force on general education assessment and review with a goal to strengthen the institution's general education program. He will also continue to coordinate the First-Year Experience program. Acree Cavalier's appointment was announced by Catawba College Provost, Dr. Jesse McCartney.
Acree Cavalier joined Catawba in 2000 after having taught for two years in the Great Books Program at Auburn University. In 2004 and 2005, he received Catawba's Teacher of the Year Award, an award determined by a vote of the students and based on classroom support, evidence of concern for students, and intellectual stimulation.
He was awarded a Fulbright Lectureship in American literature in Kiev, Ukraine for the 2005-06 academic year through the Fulbright Scholars Program. Acree Cavalier, along with wife Carol and their three sons, lived in Kiev between September 2005 and June 2006, where he taught courses in American literature at two Kiev universities and delivered numerous guest lectures at universities throughout Ukraine as well as in Egypt and Estonia.
Acree Cavalier earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Swarthmore College, his master's degree in English from Northeastern University in Boston, and his Ph.D. in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Salisbury Symphony, and has served on the vestry at St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the board of directors for Rowan Academy Charter School.
