All four faculty members of the Catawba College Psychology Department, along with several of their students, participated in the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association held recently in Nashville, Tenn. Faculty members attending included Drs. Lyn Boulter, Karen Horner, Al Roberts, and Sheila Brownlow.
The faculty and students presented three papers during the general session of the meeting. These papers included “Who needs touch?” presented by Dr. Horner, Alex Lopez of Rockwell and A. Brooks Gleason of Winston-Salem; “Do social cues influence name letter matching in spouses?” presented by Dr. Brownlow, Alex Lopez and Lauren Perry of Salisbury; and “Can self-efficacy beliefs increase MR performance in men athletes?” presented by Stephanie Valentine of Charlotte, Cathrine Balentine of Charlotte, Dr. Brownlow and Sharyn Lyons of Spring Lake.
Catawba students also presented their undergraduate-level research on posters in a session sponsored by the Committee for Equality in Professional Opportunity (CEPO), which is co-chaired by Drs. Boulter and Horner. Posters presented included “Does negative self-referent focus influence name letter matching?” by Jill Makransky of Penns Grove, N.J.; Brooks Gleason and Mary Attea of Kenmore, N.Y., sponsored by Dr. Brownlow; and “The effect of computer use on the abilities of older adults” by S. Kruger of Romney, W.Va., Dr. Boulter and Jill Makransky, sponsored by Dr. Boulter.
Dr. Boulter also served as a member of a panel entitled “Preparing for Graduate School: The Application Process,” and she served as a reviewer of several student submissions for research awards.
