The Catawba College Singers will present their Fall Concert at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 27 in the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel. The 40-member Singers are under the direction of Dr. Phillip Burgess, Catawba's director of choral music and assistant professor of music.
The Fall Concert's program will feature Franz Schubert's Mass in G and works by Mozart, Basler, Forrest and others. These selections will be accompanied by string ensemble, piano, organ and French horn. Featured soloists include Christina Pier, artist-in-residence, Dr. Barry Sang, Jacob Hahn and student vocalists Reuben "Pen" Chance of Augusta, Ga., Jordan Clifton of Raleigh, Jonathon Lodgek of Statesville, and Patrick Moore of Concord.
Dr. Phillip Burgess, who has served as an adjunct instructor of sacred music in the Catawba College Music Department for the past three years, began serving as the College's Director of Choral Music this academic year. Burgess is well-known in the Salisbury-Rowan community for his ongoing role as organist and choirmaster at the downtown St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
Burgess earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Samford University. He holds his Master of Music and his Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from The University of Michigan. His teachers have included Marilyn Mason and Robert Glasgow, Ted Tibbs organ; Betty Sue Shepherd, piano; Jerry Blackstone, Robert Page and Weston Noble, conducting; and Shirley McCrae and Jos Wuytack, Orff.
Prior to his work at Catawba, Burgess served on the faculty of Pfeiffer University and the University of Michigan. In addition to his work at Catawba and St. Luke's, he directs the Salisbury Ecumenical Choir. His work with this multi-cultural choir has led to several honors, including the 2012 Mayor's Spirit Award and the Koontz Humanitarian of the Year Award.
The Catawba Singers is a select choral ensemble open to Catawba students by audition only. The Singers are very active in performances both on and off-campus, and perform in several major concerts each year. The Catawba Singers' next concert will be Catawba's 26th annual Service of Lessons and Carols slated for 6:30 p.m. on Monday, December 2 and Thursday, December 5 in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel.
The Oct. 27 Fall Concert is free and open to the public.
