Four former student athletes will be inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame on April 2, during the HOF’s 28th annual festivities.
The inductees are (with graduation year): James Brown (1974) of Spencer; Angela (Harbour) Mayfield (1993) of Dobson; Mike Warfield of Monaca, Pa. (1991); and posthumously, Thomas J. Ferland (1986) of Webster, N.Y.
The induction ceremony, sponsored by the Catawba College Chiefs Club, will be held on Saturday, April 2, at 12:30 p.m. The luncheon will be held in Kirkland Lobby of the Abernethy Physical Education Center on campus. The Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1977 and this year’s inductees will bring the total number of members to 133.
Following are the achievements of this year’s inductees:
JAMES BROWN
A native of Salisbury, Brown played basketball at Catawba between 1970-1974. He ranks 19th on the scoring list with 1,350 points, has a career field goal percentage of 44.5 percent and a career free throw percentage of 67.6 percent. He also had 253 career rebounds from guard position. His team record during his career was 71-39. He was a starter on the 1973 Carolinas Conference champs and was a member of the second team All-Carolinas Conference in 1973-74. He earned his master’s degree in administrative education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1976.
He is a former assistant basketball coach to Bo Brickels at Davidson College; and to Norm Sloan at North Carolina State University and the University of Florida. At one time, he owned his own marketing company, Concepts Unlimited, in Tampa, Fla., and was employed by the Greensboro Area Convention & Visitors Bureau as Sports Development and Corporate Sales Manager. Additionally, he served as an G.E.M. Account Executive for Xerox and a Major Account Executive for Kaset International, an internationally renowned customer relations improvement company. In 1995, he was appointed by N.C. Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. to serve on the N.C. Sports Development Commission through May 1998.
ANGELA (HARBOUR) MAYFIELD
A native of Mt. Airy, Mayfield played basketball at Catawba between 1989 and 1993. Of the 120 games she played, she started in 115 of them. She has the second most career points, totaling 1,753, and in the 1992-93 season, she tallied the highest single season point total of 648. She holds the third all-time record for 488 assists, the sixth all-time record for 196 steals. Her record for three-point goals is seven in a game, 72 in a season, and 198 for her career.
Her team was the South Atlantic Conference Champions in 1993 and the NAIA District 26 champions in that same year, qualifying them for the NAIA National Tournament. Her team was a NAIA District 26 qualifier in 1991.
Her individual honors are many. She was a three-time All-SAC player in 1991, 1992 and 1993. She was All-NAIA District 26 in 1993, SAC and NAIA District 26 Tournament MVP in 1993 and the SAC Scholar Athlete in 1993. She was a two-time GTE Academic All-American in 1992 and 1993 and the GTE College Division Academic Player of the Year in 1993.
She was the female recipient of Catawba’s prestigious Whitener Award during her senior year at Catawba. Following her graduation with a degree in business administration from Catawba, Mayfield earned her bachelor of science degree in accounting from High Point University. In 1996, she married William Mayfield and the couple has a son. She is employed at Cross Creek Apparel in Mt. Airy.
MIKE A. WARFIELD
Warfield played football for the Indians during his years at Catawba. He played quarterback between 1987 and 1989 and again, in 1991. He is number 2 in all-time career passing with 6,923 yards, and also number two in all-time career total yards with 7,678. He is second in all-time completions with 489, and attempts, 1,000. He was number four in career touchdown passes with 42, and number six in season touchdown passes two different years with 15. He had the fifth and sixth best seasons in passing yards with 2,144 and 1,987 and the fourth best in average yards per game with 198.7 yards in 1989. He was a member of the second All-SAC team in 1988, the same year that Catawba won the SAC Championship and qualified for the NAIA playoffs.
He played in the Germany International League for the Hamburg Silver Eagles in Hamburg, Germany. For the past 11 years, he has worked as an officer with the Pennsylvania State Police, assigned to the Pennsylvania Bureau of Drug Law Enforcement for four of those years. He is currently assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force Group 1 in Pittsburgh, Pa.
He is married and the father of three children, ages 16, 10 and 3, and makes his home in Monaca, Pa., outside Pittsburg.
TOM FERLAND (d)
Ferland played soccer at Catawba between 1984 and 1985 and later coached the Lady Indians between 1990 and 1991.
He played sweeper on the Catawba team in 40 games during two seasons. His team won back-to-back Carolinas Conference championships and NAIA District 26 Championships in 1984 and 1985. He was named All-Carolinas Conference in 1984 and 1985 and All-NAIA District 26 in those same years. In 1985, he was a member of the first team NAIA All-America. He scored five goals with six assists as a defender and helped his team to 13 shutouts.
While coach of the Women’s Soccer team at Catawba, he coached the first two teams in the school’s history with a 12-13-1 record. His Lady Indians qualified for NAIA District 26 playoffs in 1991 with a 9-5-1 record.
In 1991, Ferland journeyed to Russia with Missionary Athletes International and his team played several soccer games against Russian teams. He died in 1994 at age 32 after a battle with cancer.
