In late November, Catawba College Chemistry Professor Dr. Mark Sabo and senior chemistry major Angela Bailey of Kannapolis visited to Anthropological Research Facility (ARF) at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. While there, the two attended an organizational meeting at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, toured the laboratories there, and assisted with research at the ARF, a secure outdoor laboratory where human decomposition is studied.

Bailey and fellow Catawba student, senior Paul Norris of Salisbury, also a chemistry major, have been continuing a research project on identifying the volatile organic compounds from the decomposition of a domestic hog. This project relates to FBI research that Dr. Sabo had assisted with last summer at the FBI’s Quantico, Va., facility.
