There are three possible tiers of participation at the workshop slated August 1-8, including full conductor, conducting auditor and singer. Ryan will participate in the workshop as a conducting auditor.

Ryan will have the opportunity to work with Simon Carrington, director of the Yale Schola Cantorum and professor of choral conducting at Yale University, and Brian O'Connell, Boston University and Boston Conservatory professor. With the successful completion of the workshop, Ryan will receive credit from Boston Conservatory.

According to the Sarteano Chamber Choral Conducting webpage, "This intensive conducting workshop is geared for music educators and choral conductors with strong vocal ability who are interested in rehearsing and performing chamber choral music. You will be part of a twenty-six to twenty-eight member ensemble that will prepare and perform a cappella choral music from the sixteenth to the twentieth century."

One of Ryan’s professors at Catawba, Paul E. Oakley, who serves as director of choral, vocal and sacred music studies, as an associate professor of music, and also as the college organist, was enthusiastic about this opportunity for one of his students. "This is a wonderful chance for Dan to hone his skills with conductors of international renown," Oakley said. "I am very pleased that Dan applied and was accepted to participate in the workshop."

While a student at Catawba, Ryan has been involved in various music groups such as the Catawba Madrigals, the Catawba Chorale, the Catawba Singers, Vernaculars and the Festival Four. He has also participated in several campus organizations including the Dead Athenian Society (DAS), the Catawba Ambassadors, the Order of the Blue and White. He has also been a member of the lacrosse team.
