Two Catawba College creative writing students have been selected as runners-up for the 2008 Anthony Abbott Undergraduate Poetry Competition. They are Lauren Alston Smith of Greensboro and Kali McCullough of Columbia, Tenn.
Smith's poem, "When Meeting Your Ghost," and McCullough's "Time Travel, or Today is My Past-Life's Yesterday" have been chosen by judge, Donald Mager, as two of the four runners-up in the contest. Sponsored by the Charlotte Writers' club, the competition is open to all undergraduate students in North Carolina. The contest is named in honor of poet Anthony Abbott, former chair of the department of English at Davidson College.
Both students will receive a $50 stipend and have been asked to read their winning poems at May 1 ceremony at Davidson College.
