Some Catawba College students are planningEvents to commemorate Black History Month and several of these are open to the public. These include a showing of a movie, a dance exhibition, and a talent showcase.
Students, faculty and staff of Catawba are invited to the free showing of the movie, "Crash" at 8:30 p.m., Feb. 3 in the Cannon Student Center. This is presented by Wigwam Productions and popcorn, candy and drinks will be provided.
"The Influence of Dance," a dance exhibition featuring different styles of dance influenced by African Americans, will be performed at 10 p.m. in the Cannon Student Center dining hall. Friday, February 17. This free event is hosted by junior student government association members and performers include Catawba students and groups from off campus.
Catawba College students are invited to attend The Oak Grove Freedman’s Cemetery Poetry Competition between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18 at Waterworks Visual Arts Center. The event will include readings of those who have won the competition and will feature Catawba College Writer-in-Residence Dr. Janice Fuller reading some of her poetry.
The public is invited to "Showcasing the Talents of Our People," at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 in Peeler Crystal Lounge in the Robertson College-Community Center. Hosted by the senior SGA members, it will feature the talents of African American students at Catawba and the music and literature of notable African Americans in history. Light refreshments will be provided.
Each Tuesday and Thursday during February, Catawba students can compete for prizes in the Black History Month Trivia Quiz. The students fill out a trivia question sheet during lunch and at the end of each week, those who fill out the survey correctly will have their name placed in a hat for a chance to win a gift certificate. The freshman class is hosting this event.
Also, to mark Black History Month, sophomore class SGA members are compiling a packet of monologues, short stories and quotes from notable African Americans which will be distributed to Catawba College community members.
