Seventeen Catawba College students and their faculty mentors were recognized for research at the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research & Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS), hosted virtually by East Carolina University and Elizabeth City State University. The Catawba students presented nine poster projects detailing their research. The Catawba students are majoring in Biology, Biochemistry, Environment and Sustainability, or Psychology.
The symposium, held for the 16th year, recognizes the inquiry-based scholarship conducted by undergraduates throughout the state and celebrates the dedication of mentors from higher education, industry, and government.
Catawba students who participated and their mentors are:
- Austin Snide, mentored by Dr. Carmony Hartwig, for the project, “Eggshell Organizing Factor 1 Protein in Psorophora ferox Mosquitoes.” Austin is a Biology major.
- Justin Leonard, mentored by Dr. Erin Howard and Dr. Amanda Rushing, for the project, “Journey to the Gut: Exploring the Viability of Probiotic Microbial Migrants Following Gastric Exposure.” Justin is a Biochemistry major.
- E. Malachi Gray, mentored by Dr. Jay Bolin, for the project, “Genome Size Estimates in the Genus Iva (Asteraceae).” Malachi is an Environmental and Sustainability major.
- Candace Swepson, mentored by Dr. Carmony Hartwig, for the project, “Investigating the Prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis in Mosquito Vectors from Salisbury, Rowan County, North Carolina.” Candace is a Biology major.
- Jasmine Wiitala and Oryan Malul, mentored by Dr. Amanda Rushing, for the project, “Soil Sleuthing: Student-Sourcing the Antibiotic Discovery Pipeline.” Oryan is a Biology major, and Jasmine Wiitala is double majoring in Biology and Environment and Sustainability.
- Abigail Walters and Kasey McLamb, mentored by Dr. Erin Howard, for the project, “Daphnia pulex Reproduction in Response to BPA and BPA Derivatives.” Abigail is pursuing a double major in Biology and Psychology. Kasey is a Biology major.
- Madison Kluge, Arilyn Lynch, and Matthew Rodriguez, mentored by Dr. Jay Bolin, for the project, “Measuring the Decline of Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica) Dominated Piedmont Swamp Forest due to the Initial Impacts of the Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) in Rowan County, NC.” Madison is an Environment and Sustainability major, and Arilyn is pursuing a double major in Biology and Environment and Sustainability. Matthew is a recent Environment and Sustainability graduate.
- Kira Harwood, Christina D'Amelio, and Jenna Linnick, mentored by Dr. Sheila Brownlow, for the project, “Effects of Self-Referencing and Positivity on Effectiveness of Instagram Posts.” Kira and Christiana are Psychology majors. Jenna is a recent Psychology major.
- Emily Avalos, Emily Fogleman, and Keshon Roman, mentored by Dr. Sheila Brownlow, for the project, “Hard Times: Biases as a Function of Embodied Cognition.” Emily A. and Keshon are Psychology majors. Emily F. is a recent Psychology graduate.
