Catawba College students will literally be rocking for Special Olympics October 23-30. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will sponsor a “Keep It Rockin’ ” fundraiser in the Cannon Student Center on campus to benefit the Rowan County Special Olympics.
Beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, one member from each of Catawba’s 17 NCAA teams will sit in a rocking chair and keep it rocking until halftime of the Oct. 30 Catawba football game against Carson-Newman. Monetary donations for the fund-raiser will be accepted throughout the week and will be used to help cover travel expenses of those local Special Olympians who have qualified to participate in regional and nationalEvents. Checks should be made payable to “Special Olympics of Rowan County.” Cumulative donations from the fundraiser will be presented to representatives of the Rowan County Special Olympics during halftime activities of the Oct. 30 game.
Officers for the SAAC include president Crissi Harrison, a senior volleyball player from Hickory, vice-president Carol Marquis, a junior cross-country runner from Medina, Ohio, and secretary/treasurer Thomas Giles, a senior baseball player from Lynchburg, Va. SAAC Advisors are Ginger Ashley, volleyball coach, and Nan Whitley, softball coach.
