Catawba College students will cast 'mock ballots' for the presidential candidate of their choice between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 16 in the Cannon Student Center on campus. The Mock Presidential Election on campus coincides with the advent of early voting across North Carolina and occurs just over two weeks before the Nov. 4 election.
Sponsored by Catawba's Political Science Association, the results of this mock voting will offer a microscopic glance at the preference these pivotal 18-25 year old voters have for each candidate.
"While young voters typically represent 17 percent of the electorate in the past two presidential elections, this year is showing a highly energized and excited youth vote," said Dr. Michael Bitzer, associate professor of political science and history at Catawba. "Whether they can increase their percentage of the overall electorate or, if all other age categories increase their numbers as well, is something we will need to watch closely in some key states, North Carolina being one of them."
Voters can begin casting their ballots on October 16 through the state’s absentee one-stop voting. Early voting ends Nov. 2nd.
