Three outstanding Catawba College Theatre Arts seniors who recently graduated in May are the recipients of several prestigious awards:
Augustin Daly Award
Zack Karvon ’20 was the recipient the Augustin Daly Award, presented to an Outstanding Student of the Year in Theatre Arts. This award is named in memory of one of North Carolina’s most historically important theatre figures and voted on by the Theater Arts faculty.
The Kickstart Your Art Scholarship Award
Krissey Browder ’20 was the recipient of the Kickstart Your Art Scholarship, founded by Catawba College alumna Jasika Nicole Pruitt ’02. This award is offered to students who plan to pursue their own projects once they leave Catawba.
In regards to receiving the scholarship, Browder said, “I am so incredibly honored and excited to have received the Kickstart Your Art Award! I look up to Jasika so much and knowing she believes in my journey has brought the confidence boost I needed while entering the professional world in a pandemic! I’m incredibly thankful.”
Browder has been involved with several marketing jobs around her hometown while acting in the virtual Women’s Theatre Festival. She is actively seeking remote acting employment. If theatre companies reopen as planned, she will be moving down to Fort Meyers, Florida in September to begin a 9-month apprenticeship in front-of-house and marketing with the Florida Repertory Theatre.
Boardman Award
Kelly Sandoval ’20 was the receipient of the Boardman Awards for Help with Grad school at UNCG.
“I'm immensely grateful to have received the Boardman Award given the ever-changing world. I made the decision to apply to graduate school at the very last minute in light of closing of the live entertainment industry. Having not initially expected much, I am incredibly blessed to not only begin my assistantship with UNC Greensboro in the fall, but to continue to have ways of being involved in the arts and entertainment world through graduate study,” says Sandoval.
Currently, Sandoval is on track to be on campus come August and spend the next three years completing her MFA in Theatre with a concentration in Design. In the meantime, she’s living and working back home in New Mexico, saving money for her move back to North Carolina.
